Itinerary

The Perfect 3-Day Santa Monica Weekend

Three days in Santa Monica is enough to fall completely in love and not nearly enough to see everything. This itinerary threads the highlights β€” beach, culture, food, and coastline β€” into a trip that feels effortless and distinctly Californian.

Day 1

Arrive & Explore

Afternoon
Check in to your hotel β€” aim for something on or near Ocean Avenue for the best access to the beach and the bluffs above. Unpack, breathe, and let the Pacific air reset your clock.
Late Afternoon
Walk to the Santa Monica Pier β€” follow the path down to the beach and walk south along the water to the pier. Ride the Ferris wheel, watch the buskers, and let the scale of the Pacific sink in. The light here at 5pm is otherworldly.
Sunset
Palisades Park β€” climb back up to the bluffs for sunset. The park's benches face west over the ocean; it's one of the great free shows in the world.
Evening
Dinner at Rustic Canyon β€” Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan's neighbourhood restaurant is one of the best in California. Book ahead. The menu changes with the season and the produce is always extraordinary.
Day 2

Beach, Venice & Dining

Morning
Morning on the beach β€” arrive before 9am to beat the crowds. Swim, walk, or simply lie on the sand with a coffee from one of the beach-side kiosks. The marine layer usually burns off by 10am.
Mid-Morning
Bike the Strand to Venice β€” rent a cruiser or e-bike and ride the dedicated path south to Venice Beach. The route is flat, beautiful, and takes about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace. Lock up and explore the boardwalk.
Lunch
Abbot Kinney Boulevard β€” walk north from Venice Beach to SM's most stylish street. Gjusta is the destination: incredible pastries, sandwiches, and smoked fish in a converted industrial space. Arrive early; the queue is worth it.
Afternoon
Santa Monica Farmers Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) β€” the Wednesday market on Arizona Ave is one of the best in California. Chefs from across LA shop here. Browse the stone fruit, heirloom tomatoes, and extraordinary flowers.
Sunset
Sunset sailing from the pier β€” a 90-minute sailing tour puts you right in the middle of the golden light as the city glows behind you. Several operators depart from the pier; book same-day or in advance in summer.
Evening
Dinner at FIG Restaurant β€” at the Fairmont Miramar, FIG is a Santa Monica institution. The terrace overlooks the garden; the menu is Californian at its best. The bar programme is exceptional.
Day 3

Malibu Day Trip & Departure

Morning
Drive PCH north to Malibu β€” pick up a rental car or take an Uber along Pacific Coast Highway. The drive itself is one of the most beautiful in California: ocean on the left, sandstone bluffs on the right, all 21 miles of Malibu stretched before you.
Late Morning
Brunch at Nobu Malibu β€” book ahead for a table on the deck above the Pacific. Nobu's morning menu is lighter than dinner but equally beautiful. The view alone is worth the reservation.
Afternoon
Hike in the Santa Monica Mountains β€” the Backbone Trail and Temescal Canyon offer dramatic ridge-line hiking with views over both the Pacific and the San Fernando Valley. Temescal Gateway Park is 20 minutes from the beach.
Late Afternoon
Return to Palisades Park for the last sunset β€” end where you began. The bluffs above Santa Monica at golden hour on your last evening. Bring a bottle of something cold and make it last.

Questions

Common Questions

Is Santa Monica safe to visit?
Santa Monica is generally a safe, well-patrolled destination. The beach areas, Third Street Promenade, and hotel districts are busy and well-lit. Like any city, use common sense with your belongings and stick to main streets at night. The beachfront is exceptionally family-friendly during the day.
What is the best time of year to visit?
June through October delivers reliably warm, sunny weather β€” ocean temperatures peak in August and September. Spring (March–May) is beautiful with fewer crowds and blooming gardens. Even winter is mild, with temperatures rarely below 55Β°F. The famous "June Gloom" (marine layer through June) burns off each day by noon.
How far is Santa Monica from LAX?
Santa Monica is approximately 8 miles from LAX. In good traffic the journey takes 20–25 minutes by car or rideshare. During rush hour (7–9am and 4–7pm) expect 40–60 minutes. The FlyAway Bus takes 45–60 minutes and costs $9.75 β€” a great value option if you're traveling solo.
Do I need a car in Santa Monica?
For Santa Monica itself, no β€” you can walk the beach, the Pier, the Promenade, and most of the dining and shopping scene on foot. The Metro Expo Line connects downtown SM to the rest of LA. However, for day trips to Malibu, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, or the San Fernando Valley, a car is highly recommended.
Which neighbourhood should I stay in?
For first-time visitors, stay as close to Ocean Avenue as possible β€” you'll have the bluffs above the beach, easy Pier access, and a walkable concentration of great restaurants. Mid-city (Main Street, Montana Avenue) is wonderful for a more residential, less touristy feel. Venice is ideal if you want boutique hotels with a creative, bohemian atmosphere.
Is Santa Monica good for families?
Exceptionally so. Pacific Park amusement park on the Pier, the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, three miles of safe beach with lifeguards, bike rentals for all ages, and a great range of casual family-friendly restaurants make it one of the best family beach destinations in California. Most hotels offer connecting rooms and beach equipment hire.
