Renting a Car in Santa Monica

Here's the honest truth: you don't need a car to enjoy Santa Monica itself. The beach, the Pier, the Promenade, most hotels, and the best restaurants are all within comfortable walking or biking distance. The Metro Expo Line connects the city to the rest of LA efficiently and cheaply.

But if you want to explore beyond — and you should — a car unlocks everything California does best. PCH north to Malibu is one of the great drives in the world. The Santa Monica Mountains, Getty Villa, Topanga Canyon, Zuma Beach, and the vineyards of Malibu wine country are all within 45 minutes.

Rent your car at LAX if possible — the rates are better than downtown pickup, and you can return it when you fly home. If you're staying downtown and want a car for day trips only, several agencies have locations within a short walk of Ocean Ave.

Day Trip Routes Worth Driving

🌊
PCH North to Malibu 21 miles of coastline — the quintessential California drive. Allow half a day.
🎬
Beverly Hills & Hollywood Classic LA sightseeing. Take Sunset Blvd east — the most scenic route.
🏔️
Topanga Canyon & the Mountains 25 minutes from the beach into wild California chaparral and hiking trails.
🍷
Malibu Wine Country Surprisingly excellent wineries in the hills above Malibu. Plan a full day.

Parking Tips for Santa Monica

  • Downtown SM parking structures charge $3–7/hour — budget accordingly for full-day visits.
  • The best free(ish) parking is at Will Rogers State Beach on PCH, north of the main beach area.
  • Street parking has 2-hour limits on most residential blocks. Pay attention to signs.
  • Some hotels offer valet parking for $45–65/night — factor this into your total hotel cost.
  • The Main Street area (south SM) has slightly cheaper and more plentiful parking than downtown.
  • Apps like SpotHero and ParkWhiz let you pre-book parking structures at discounted rates.
  • Avoid PCH in Malibu on summer weekends — the traffic backs up for miles and the road closes occasionally for fire prevention.
⚠️ Note on downtown parking: Santa Monica's downtown parking is genuinely expensive and limited in summer. If your hotel offers parking, compare the nightly rate to the $35+/day you'll spend in public structures before renting a car.
